School Bus Company Uses Ceiling-Mounted Traveling Bridge for Workers Accessing Bus Roofs

Overview

Warner Specialty Products, Inc. is a material handling and ergonomic equipment distributor based in North Haven, Connecticut. Warner Specialty Products supplies a range of products for handling, assembling, servicing, and storing products in production and warehousing facilities. They also carry ergonomic products and accessories for improving workplace safety, including personal fall protection and fall arrest systems.

Leonard Bus Sales, Inc. provides school bus sales and maintenance service at five facilities throughout New York. Their facilities offer one-stop-shop service for a full range of maintenance and repair needs. Some tasks performed by Leonard bus technicians require workers to access the roofs of buses that require service. The roof of a school bus is typically around 10 feet six inches off the ground, so workers on a school bus roof could face serious fall hazards.

Solution

Leonard Bus needed to provide a new fall protection solution for its workers. Warner Specialty Products, a Rigid Lifelines dealer, was able to help them find the right solution for their school bus service facility at their Saratoga Springs location.

Together, they selected a Rigid Lifelines Ceiling-Mounted Traveling Bridge Anchor Track system. The system includes 26-foot runways mounted on three-foot drop rod hangers and a 24-foot bridge. The bridge has a single track, and the system is designed for a single user. The system is located in one bay in the Leonard Bus facility. Workers can enter the bay normally and park a bus underneath the new fall arrest system.

Impact

The Rigid Lifelines Traveling Bridge fall arrest system offers full fall protection coverage over the working area of a school bus. The traveling bridge design allows a worker to move lengthwise and side-to-side while working on top of a bus, providing a full range of motion.

The system is also mounted directly to the facility roof without any additional support structures. The ceiling-mounted design leaves the floor of the facility free of obstructions due to large support columns. Workers are able to move busses and other equipment freely inside the bay without worrying about striking the supports. Fall protection equipment helps reduce the fall hazards when working at height. With the fall arrest system in place, Leonard Bus Sales workers can now access the top of busses much more safely.
