Fall Protection for Icy Conditions

February 8, 2013

Working at height has a special set of challenges associated with it. To complicate a dangerous situation further, when workers need to perform tasks at height during winter weather, there are even more opportunities for danger. If workers are tying off to a cable system such as a flexible horizontal lifeline, they are much more likely to face snow and ice buildup, ultimately resulting in equipment malfunctions during frozen weather conditions. This increased chance of failure is due to the fact that the horizontal wire rope system is completely exposed to the elements.

Rigid Lifelines utilizes enclosed track that protects the trolley and the track’s rolling surfaces. By enclosing the trolley, we are shielding one of the major connection points between a person and their anchorage. The trolley and enclosed track work together to produce an efficient and reliable fall protection solution. Thanks to the track, the trolley is protected from exposure to dust, dirt, paint, chemicals, bird droppings, snow, ice, and water. As the trolley is traveling inside of the track, the wheels act as a cleaning device. Thus, the trolley and the track work together in symbiosis to produce a superior, self-cleaning, and well-protected fall protection system.

Wire rope users have reportedly used a broom handle as a means of breaking the ice from their wire rope system. This method is both inefficient and impractical, not to mention dangerous. Although it would be mildly amusing to see a construction worker or industrial service worker vigorously swatting at a wire with a broom, there is nothing funny about the potential danger that is lurking on that wire. Winter conditions are not a good time for people to be working at dangerous heights with potentially hazardous equipment.

Anyone who is working in icy conditions should always consider standard safety measures to avoid slipping and falling. Remember to clear away snow from the work areas, sprinkle rock salt to melt ice, and always wear boots with a reliable tread and warm clothing (like hats, gloves, and jackets) and tie off to an enclosed track system for year-round, weather-proof fall protection.
